Our Readers Rally group met this morning, and we read Finding Winnie. The goal was to share with students that the shorter books do not have as much information and the questions may be harder at competition due to less information in the book. We had some great discussions and connections made while reading. After we read, we set up the buzzers and had a little pracitce using them while answering questions from the story. The group is still excited as ever about our books this year, and I love that! Check out the story below. There is also a little video from the author. |

I have said more than once that my goal was to post once a week about all the things we do in the Knight ES Media Center. I have started several times and failed to stick with it. Making a weekly post is now on my calendar every week. Hopefully, that will be enough of a reminder to stop, reflect, and write about the week. So here it goes.
I do plan to post a few more times and share some things that have occurred since the beginning of the school year. For starters, let's talk about this week. My weekly post will be long since it is a summary of our week and a lot happens in the media center in a week. We had CoGAT testing on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This led to numerous classes being unable to visit during their normal time. I led the charge and began reschduling classes. I had planned some great activities and did not want any students to miss out. Kindergarten We are still working on making Mr. Wiggle happy by taking care of our books and using shelf markers. This week I introduced the SMARTBoard to classes and we played a matching game with images that made Mr. Wiggle happy and sad. Students are always fascinated by the SMARTBoard and love to be able to use it. First Grade Classes were introduced to the Light Bulb Lab and the numerous choices they could make after checking out. We discussed behavior expectations and how to share and work together. With the school-wide theme focusing on growth mindset, students and I talked about how we can make our brains stronger. This connection was made to the different activities in the Light Bulb Lab and how they would help our brains grow. Back in August, someone from our public library branch contacted me about having a school night at the library. This event was to be held in September for Library Card Sign-Up month. Well, our night was last night, and it was awesome! I did not think we would have a good turn out. I tried to promote it but knew I could have done a better job. In the end, it did not matter. Students, staff, and parents came out to the library. We had almost 50 students along with numerous parents and family members. More than 25 students or parents signed up for a library card. The night was really fun and was made possible by a great collaboration with Paige from the Mountain Park Library.
I had to catch up on what I missed that Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday due to attending a conference. I was fortunate to be able to attend the Georgia Educational Technology Conference. It is a busy 3 days but totally worth it! My brain is exploding with all the new ideas for using technology at Knight. For the media program, I decided on 3 technology goals that I will work towards in the next 3-5 years. I would like to find grants and donors to be able to add the following technology items to the media center.
1. 30 iPad minis 2. SMART table 3. 3D printer I want students to be exposed to technology when in the media center and the above items would help. I will now begin my search for grants and fundraising ideas so that my goals can become reality. October was a busy month but definitely worth it! Our school pumpkin patch is filled with amazing book characters. The excitement created by the pumpkins is something I wish I could bottle up. We would love for the pumpkins to last forever but know they do not. We have already said goodbye to a few pumpkins that could not take the "pressure" (or paint or temperature). It is a daily task to make sure our books and pumpkins are safe from one another.
With Election Day coming next week, the students will get a chance to cast their vote for a favorite pumpkin. Stay tuned for our election results. |
